Roxanne Palmer
Hello!
I am a born and bred Londoner and there is nothing more that I love than showing people my hometown! I have lived in and around London my entire life, so let me show you the very best that this 2000-year-old city has to offer. I am also an actress and have been lucky enough to work for many years in theatre, performing in plays and musicals in the world class ‘West End’ of London and touring around the UK and the US. Let me take you on a tour and unveil the most exciting and interesting parts of our history and culture. I offer half day or short tours giving you the ‘best of’ wherever you want so see- all of the fun (and sometimes scandalous) stories most definitely included! I can cater the tour to your needs and I relish having guests of all ages and can accommodate any size group.
I offer the absolute ‘must sees’ of London and Windsor
Tower of London
If the history of London could be summed up in one place, it’s the Tower! A fortress, prison, palace and it was even a zoo! Meet the ravens and the Beefeaters whose job it is to keep the infamous Tower safe. Do you know the rhyme ‘divorce, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived’ referring to the fates of the poor wives of our tyrant king Henry 8th? Well, the two who died, were in fact executed at the Tower. And of course, the Tower holds the most complete and impressive royal regalia in the world- the crown jewels!
Westminster Abbey
Our most significant church in England. Where nearly all of our kings and queens in the last 1000 years have been crowned. Yes, this is the home of coronations! It is also where our late queens funeral was held and where her grandson Prince William married the beautiful Kate Middleton. If that isn’t impressive enough, it is also a huge graveyard where some of our most famous Brits are buried like Charles Dickens, Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawking as well as over 30 kings and queens! Come and see a who’s who of British history as well as stunning gothic architecture.
St Pauls Cathedral
There has been a cathedral on this site since 604AD! Follow in the footsteps of Princess Diana who married Prince Charles here (who is now of course KING Charles!). A stunning baroque cathedral with one of the best views in the world of a cathedral from one end, all the way to the other end. And if you’re feeling fit, you could even venture to the top of one of our most famous landmarks, the dome of St Pauls Cathedral and enjoy panoramic views of the entire city.
British Museum
You may have seen many memes about the oldest national and public museum in the world. Why not find out for yourself? Learn the real story of the museum and dive into the history of the entire world at the British Museum. From the Parthenon marbles (from the Acropolis in Athens) to the Rosetta Stone- the reason why we’re all still fascinated by Egyptology to this day! And if you’re feeling brave then perhaps, we can go and see the Egyptian mummies themselves, including the Gebelein man who is over 5000 years old!
National Gallery
Did you know that the teenage mutant ninja turtles are named after renaissance artists? Well at the National Gallery you can appreciate their namesakes and see the paintings of Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo (yes, Leonardo Da Vinci!). Take a tour through the history of western art and see the work of some of the most famous artists in the world like Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Eyck, Van Dyke and Van Gogh. You know Vincent’s painting of The Sunflowers, yes, it is here!
East London walking tour
Just outside the ancient walled city of Londinium (where the name London comes from) was where the ghettoes were. The poorest of the poor lived here in the east end and it was where wave after wave of immigrants made London their home. From the French hugenauts to the Jewish people escaping persecution, the Irish escaping famine and more recently the Bangladeshi community escaping turmoil. This area is where industry and factories were and was heavily bombed in the Blitz of WW2. It was also the site of many notorious crimes including those of the gangsters ‘The Kray twins’ and it is also where Jack the Ripper murdered his victims. Today, it is very safe and a cool and trendy hipster place with lots of beautiful street art. So much to see with layer upon layer of history!
Windsor Castle
Take a short trip outside of London to Windsor castle, the largest occupied castle in the world. Yes, royalty do still live here! It was one of the favourite places of our late Queen and it is where she is laid to rest. Many other important people are buried here too including the notorious King Henry 8th. Marvel at the huge art collection and Queen Mary’s dollhouse- this dollhouse has working electricity and plumbing! Only the very best for royalty. I can also give a guided tour around the ancient town of Windsor itself and we could pop over the river to Eton, where both Prince William and Prince Harry went to school and it was also the school of the majority of our prime ministers. A must see for any visit to the UK.
