David Simmons
Hello, I’m David and I qualified as a London Blue Badge guide in my 20s - then put the badge in a drawer for years and did other things. These included translator at the Presidency in Yaoundé, Cameroun; reporter, news editor and producer with BBC Radio, British Armed Forces Radio (BFBS), Swiss Radio and Austrian Radio; and General Manager Latin America with ABC-owned Worldwide Television News (WTN). I have a number of interests: as an Oxford University biological sciences graduate, I’m still fascinated by how the human body works; I like music from many countries; old English and Welsh county maps; Georgian grandfather clocks. And languages: I speak good French and Spanish, not bad German and a smattering of Arabic, Japanese and Romanian. Other hobbies include cycling, swimming, gardening and, most important of all, spending time with our several children (two of whom are tour guides) and many grandchildren, two of whom [not in the photograph!] do Harry Potter film location walks in London. I’m a member of the Victory Services Club (https://www.vsc.co.uk/). My work, and travel with my family, has taken me to dozens of countries around the globe, but there’s no place like home – London. Looking forward to showing you what our capital city and beyond has to offer….! What guests have said about David as a tour guide: “On our tour David had answers to all our questions: thorough, informative and personable” - Adventuregirl1910, Boston MA “We took two tours with David. His anecdotes were relevant, entertaining and easy to grasp, a wonderful tour guide whom I cannot praise enough” - Patricia, Makati, Philippines. “Nice start to London. The booking was a mess by the travel agent but the driver Jim and the guide David made it an awesome experience. Thanks David and Jim” - Jet65913835813 “Good tour. Tour guide David was great. We saw a lot in a short time frame” - BG @531bg “Best London day tour. We took this with our family which includes young kids. Our tour guide David was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and excellent about making sure the entire group was present before departing a location” - Cmfrblynum, Lewis Center, OH “This was a comprehensive tour of London! A must do for folks who want to take in the key highlights without rush and without wastage of time! David was an excellent and super professional guide!” - Alex-Njui, Lavington, Kenya “I had David as the Tour Guide. I got really lucky as the weather was great (sunny) and traffic was light because it was on a Saturday. People need to adjust expectations as the tour is designed to cover as much as possible in a day which is tight considering the AMAZING places that you visit. The Tower of London, for example, is a full day to really take it all in. St Paul Cathedral, at least half a day. David is like a walking encyclopedia and obviously very experienced managing groups of people” - Ivan X, Caledon, Canada “Our guide (David) was so great I can’t praise him enough. Very knowledgeable and pointed out historical places of significance... when we went to Buckingham Palace for changing of the guard. David told us the best place to be to watch (and not to try and squeeze in with everyone else by the gates). He definitely had the inside knowledge for the best vantage point because the guards marched right in front of us and then a few minutes later police on motorbikes led a car right past us with the Queen in it!! David tried to tell us he planned it all for us! Lol but what a bonus and if we had not stood where he told us we would have missed it” - Annette Clennell, Wellington, New Zealand “A great day out in the Cotswolds. The little villages and the country side. The history of the area and the natural beauty. The guide David, was excellent. He provided sufficient information without overloading us” - Clark G, Canberra, Australia.
