Barry Houlston

Born and worked in London for most of my life.

I am a sensitive, attentive, friendly, and enthusiastic London based guide! Patient with a sense of humour and a talker. Encyclopedic wide ranging cultural knowledge, with many memorable, unforgettable stories to tell, and an ability to provide so much practical advice to enhance your visit!

My teenage years were happy in one of the English "rural home counties" - a geographical district called Kent - also known as the Garden of England. It is populated with some notable castles and grand houses, ... like so many rural localities throughout the UK. An education stretching back to the 1960's, and yes I am a "child" of that era, seeing many of the UK cultural changes 1st hand from the pop and fashion explosion centred on the Beatles and Rolling Stones, to flower power of the 1970's and beyond. I am from the same area of London as David Bowie, Michael Caine and Charlie Chaplin! My life has seen the rise and rise of London as a world class city on many levels. A British family influenced by events of the Second World War (1939-45) and a childhood benefiting from the "baby boomer" legacy thereafter.

I am educated, with a politics, philosophy & economics degree from the London School of Economics (LSE), plus another degree from the University of Westminster. My profession until 2012, was "chartered surveying". The terminology means little to those outside the UK, but is in essence "real estate". I practised as an expert in commercial property construction and urban development. Married with two grown up children. I can interpret buildings and their origins by looking at the architecture.

I love history, culture, royalty, historical & political figures such as Churchill, Shakespeare, Dickens, and the military men - Wellington, Montgomery, Nelson. There is so much in London and the wider UK, and it is always a pleasure to share as much as I can with visitors, and tailor their time, experience, aspirations to entertain whatever age or origin a person or group is/are. Over recent years it has been my pleasure to guide families, groups, and individuals. If you want someone flexible, friendly, fun and professional, then I am here to help you

Today as a qualified Blue Badge Guide I enjoy sharing my passion with visitors from many countries and those from within the UK looking to investigate their own heritage. If you wish to explore the main London visitor attractions, further afield, or find some of the lesser known corners and byways, then I know I can help to make the most of your visit. If you like Shakespeare, Dickens, or Harry Potter then I can show you some of the streets where actual and fictional characters have walked.

I look forward to welcoming you.

Top 10 Interesting Facts About Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 at Portsmouth and was one of the first world superstars both in his own lifetime and ever since. He was recognised not only in Great Britain as a great writer but abroad, particularly France and the United States where he travelled extensively. He emerged as a writer in a stratospheric way in 1836, with Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist.

10 Things That May Surprise You About London's West End - Theatreland

London is a "world class" city on many levels, and attracts visitors for a wide variety of reasons, and none more so than for its theatrical reputation, credentials and concentration of West End theatres, known as "Theatreland." Today there are well over sixty theatres both large and small located in a fairly tight geographical area.
